Dr M Nahid Hasan

Treasurer, RAPID

Owner,
Business Connection BV
Dr M Nahid Hasan, a self-made entrepreneur and owner at Business Connection BV and share holders of Biovista Bangladesh, North East Agrovet AS (Oslo) and Dryden Aqua Asia (HongKong).  During his PhD and Post-doctoral research at Delft University of Technology in Biotechnology he spent considerable time in water and environmental research. He is the first author for an international patent for using Biomaterials in Nano-filtration of liquids specially water. Being of Asian origin he deeply felt the necessity of a simple, cost effective, sustainable and innovative solution for clean drinking and usable water for the community . In collaboration with Dr Howard Dryden and Mr Dominik Graf (Dryden Aqua, Scotland  and  Switzerland) and Mr Halim Mirza (Hanovia, UK), he successfully developed and delivered Biovista Water Systems to customers in Bangladesh with high satisfaction in residential , industrial and hospitals and various community systems.

Dr Hasan obtained his BSc degree (majoring in Biochemistry) from the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and MSc degree (majoring in Medical Molecular Biology) from the University of Westminster in collaboration with University College London (University of London), UK.

Immediately after he was awarded MSc degree (UK), Dr Hasan moved to Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in The Netherlands as a research assistant. He then admitted into PhD course in the field of oncology. After one and half years of research at LUMC, Dr Hasan moved to Delft University of Technology (TUDELFT) to continue his PhD in industrial Biotechnology. After completing his PhD, Dr Hasan worked at the same University as a postdoctoral fellow for consecutive four years in environmental Biotechnology and Bio-Nano Technology.

Towards the end of his PhD study under the supervision of Dr Fred Hagen Dr Hasan starred to look into arsenic mitigation problem in Bangladesh and neighboring countries and found out that most of the prevailing technologies were able to remove bulk of arsenic contamination. However, they were falling short of achieving  Bangladesh and Internatinal standard. He then started his research using biomaterial in removing arsenic and other oxo-anions form water with funding from STW, KIWAr and NRCC of The Netherlands. He has successfully demonstrated the  use of biomaterials for the fine purification of metals and oxo-anions from water. Dr. Nahid and his team is currently working restlessly to provide solutions that assure zero impact on the environment by the industries and maintain the ecosystem.

Looking back to his origin Dr Hasan first engaged himself in establishing a trading line for building materials to Bangladesh market. By engaging people from various parts of the world with proper knowledge in various materials Dr Hasan enlightened many buyers in private and government sectors and eliminated many unreliable supplies from the market. Thus he helps the local builders and contractors to build with appropriate materials for both private and government use and minimizing accidents and saving building related costs.

In course of commodity trading  Dr Hasan discovered that Bangladeshi entrepreneurs are paying huge costs in doing business both in short - term and long term business. He then started to talk to European banks and government bodies to provide long term credit to Bangladeshi entrepreneurs under the guarantee of various export credit agencies of various European Governments. With the strong leadership of Dr Atiur Rahman in the Central Bank of Bangladesh as Governor he eventually succeeded in bringing long term finance to various industries including textiles, power and building materials industries including steel, cement , packaging etc. Export credit financing is now one of most preferred option for long term and large scale financing in Bangladesh.
